چکیده

Rumen fill and turnover rates of liquid, grain, and hay in the gastrointestinal tract were measured using rare-earth elements as multiple markers in four rumen fistulated cows during the dry period and throughout lactation. Apparent digestibilities of dry matter, crude protein, neutral-detergent fiber and aciddetergent fiber were also measured. Hay to grain ratios of 82.5:17.5, 45:55, 57:43, and 67:33 (dry matter basis) were fed during the dry period and during weeks 0 to 12, 13 to 24, and 25 to 44 of lactation, respectively. Apparent digestibilities of DM, CP, ADF and NDF were 64.1, 67.2, 68.3, 66.4; 77.2, 70.9, 73.0, 73.7; 41.0, 34.5, 35.6, 38.2;and 51.6, 36.7, 44.0 and 47.1 for the four phases of the experiment. For the dry period, 0 to 12, 13 to 24, and 25 to 44 weeks of lactation, rumen dry matter and liquid content (kg) were 9.6, 62.1; 16.0, 79.4; 16.0, 89.3; and 15.7 and 86.0. Mean ruminal turnover rates across periods for liquid, grain and hay were 8.1, 4.4, and 3.9% per hour. Experimental period had no effect on turnover rate. However, stage of lactation, level of intake and hay:grain ratio all changed with each experimental period. The greatest difference in turnover rate (twofold) was among individual cows. There were small differences noted among stage of lactation periods in total mean retention time of liquid, grain and bay fractions

Effects of Specific Gravity and Particle Size of Passage Marker on Particulate Rumen Turnover in Holestine Dairy Cattle

This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of specific gravity (SG) and particle size (PS) of Chromium-mordanated alfalfa neutral detergent fiber (NDF) markers on estimation of particulate rumen turnover. Thirty-two multiparous, mid lactation Holstein dairy cows (body weight=654±24 kg) were allotted to a completely randomized design experiment with two replications in a 4×4 factoria...

Effects of Fat Supplementation and Chop Length on Milk Composition and Ruminal Fermentation of Cows Fed Diets Containing Alfalfa Silage

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fat supplementation for enhancing milk conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in early lactation without affecting ruminal fermentation. 24 Holstein dairy cows were assigned to a completely randomized design employing a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement. Factors were particle size (15 and 25 mm) and two different sources of alfalfa supplemented with and wit...

Hemorrhagic bowel syndrome in dairy cattle in Iran: a case report

Hemorrhagic bowel syndrome is a highly fatal intestinal disease of adult dairy cattle with uncertain cause. In a dairy herd in KhorasanRazavi province, Northeast of Iran, two cows showed depression, anorexia, decrease in milk production, ruminal hypomotility, bruxism and dehydration. At necropsy, massive hemorrhage and clot formation was observed within the jejunum and bacterial culture of the ...

The relationship between odd- and branched-chain fatty acids and microbial nucleic acid bases in rumen

OBJECTIVE This study aims to identify the relationship between odd- and branched-chain fatty acids (OBCFAs) and microbial nucleic acid bases in the rumen, and to establish a model to accurately predict microbial protein flow by using OBCFA. METHODS To develop the regression equations, data on the rumen contents of individual cows were obtained from 2 feeding experiments. In the first experime...

Blood gases and metabolite content and ruminal fermentation in response to diets with different fermentability in Holstein dairy cows

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of diets having different fermentability on blood gases, blood metabolites and ruminal fermentation parameters in Holstein dairy cows. Four multiparous Holstein dairy cows (665 ± 25 kg BW, 170 ± 7.0 DIM and 15±1.5 kg of milk yield), fitted with rumen cannulae, were used in a 4×4 Latin Square design with 28-d periods. Corn starch and sucro...
